Just make sure you backup each entry with the Registry's Export function (File> Export), because they have a tendency to disappear if you don't, or the color issues may still be present. This patcher puts an entry into your Registry that fixes the color issues. or you can use an app called Windows 7 DirectDraw patcher. To fix the color issues you can either kill Explorer.exe before starting each game (which will prevent you from using any functions related to Explorer, or accessing the Taskbar, etc). I would also use no-cd cracks just to eliminate a bit of hassle, but this is entirely individual preference. Make sure you download the latest patches for AOE and its' Rise Of Rome expansion from Microsoft Age of Empires and The Official Age of Empires Expansion: The Rise of Rome, and then apply them. If you do not wish to keep the Admin account active then simply issue the net user administrator /active:no command at an elevated command prompt when finished. My solution for this is to activate the hidden Administrator account (net user administrator /active:yes at an elevated command prompt), log in to that account, run the installer as Administrator, and then log out. For some reason a regular/Microsoft account with administrator privilidges may not be able to install the game, sometimes the installer will hang at the end (99/100%) when attempting to copy EULA.RTF. However, i do not gaurantee it will work for everyone else.įor AOE 1: Make sure to install the game as Administrator, and make sure to select the Full option when installing. my advice is a mixture of what is seen above. I am going to provide what I believe to be a failproof and idiotproof solution for all 3 AOE games, without needing to muck around with virtual machines, compatibility modes, etc, and after going through alot of headaches and spending months getting these games to work perfectly. So for me it can be added to the list of working games in the well known thread here on the forum. The fix was to add extra registry settings to Wow6432Node:Īge of Empires 2 (v.2.0a) works well without compatibility settings (only the registry fix needs to be applied if not working well without). Very good (looks normal) (compared with the mess from win7) => Surprisingly when you enter the game: The menu looks OK.

There are with no doubt issues (graphics is old with 16bit color or lower).

The screenshot (printscreen) looks worse than what you normally see when you play. That's the pink water I've been complaining about + the rest is also bad-looking. To begin this is a screenshot of AOE2 match in Win7 圆4 SP1: The menu's are changed in color (as always) but it works well ingame.

I can say that it works just as well as in x86. I tested AOE2 in Windows 8 CP 圆4 in VMware Player. Some time ago I tested AOE2 in Dev Preview x86 and it works well ingame (worked even in Virtualbox with good colors).
